GENEVA, Switzerland — Mpox is spreading from Africa to Europe, triggering a global warning from the World Health Organization.
Experts worry that the virus, which has killed more than 500 people and sickened nearly 15,000, will be headed to the U.S. next.
Mpox can be spread through direct contact with infected persons or items like needles. In some cases, it can also be transmitted from contaminated animals to people.
But, Dr. Peter Hotez of Baylor College of Medicine says there are vaccines that work, so he’s calling for a national vaccination campaign among those most at risk including immunocompromised patients, pregnant women and the LGBTQ-Plus community.
