INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis International Airport is a favorite for travelers, but now the airport means something entirely different to a group of new Americans.
The Indy Airport hosted its first-ever U.S. citizen naturalization ceremony Tuesday. Forty-seven migrants can now call themselves American citizens and Hoosiers.
“It is my sincere pleasure to congratulate you on becoming a citizen of the United States of America, and a Hoosier,” said Emily Zink, a representative from Senator and Governor-elect Mike Braun’s office, who read a letter from Braun to the group Tuesday. Braun could not attend in-person.
“Indiana has a long history of welcoming people from all over the world to have a fresh start,” Zink continued, “from the shores of Lake Michigan to the mighty Ohio River, Indiana has a little bit of everything and people from all over the world right here among our farms, cities, and rolling hills.”
The Ben Davis High School Premiers performed the National Anthem. Also in attendance were leaders from the Assistant U.S. Attorney’s Office, U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services, and the Office of Congressman Andre Carson.
The group of new Americans also had the chance to obtain information and resources from representatives of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Indianapolis Public Library, IndyGo, the Marion County Clerk’s Office and Indiana League of Women Voters.
