MUAN COUNTY, South Korea — South Korean officials are confirming 179 people were killed in the crash of a passenger plane at an airport in the southern part of the country.
The Jeju Air flight from Bangkok was carrying 181 people when it skidded off the runway, crashed into a barrier, and burst into flames early Sunday. Two crew members were the only survivors.
South Korean officials say a bird strike likely triggered a chain of events that led to the incident. A “bird strike” usually refers to when a moving plane hits a bird.
President Biden says he’s “deeply saddened” by the loss of life and pledged U.S. assistance with the NTSB among the aviation experts set to take part in the crash investigation.
