INDIANAPOLIS — You have probably heard quite a bit about “banned books,” especially in the last few years. Well, one cinema in Indy is planning to show movies adapted from some of these titles.
“Banned books” – titles considered to be inappropriate, controversial, or otherwise problematic – might not be totally inaccessible in the United States, but are often restricted from certain library sections, classrooms, and other spaces.
This month, the Alamo Drafthouse on Lafayette Road will be showing “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” and “To Kill a Mockingbird,” both of which were adapted from often-“banned” books.
The theater plans to host its BANNED! event in an effort to showcase “the stories that refuse to be silenced.” While you’re watching, you can also enjoy a meal, drinks, and more.
“Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” will be shown on Sunday, January 19th, at 6 p.m., while “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be shown on Wednesday, January 29th, at 7 p.m. Get tickets here.
The idea of banning or restricting certain titles has recently been a topic of political conversation in the Hoosier state. Learn more here.
