A bill has been introduced to give Hoosiers the day off after the Super Bowl. House Bill 1517, coauthored by Rep. Mitch Gore, aims to make Monday after the big game a state holiday. The bill also tries to give Gore some attention.

A study by UKG estimates U.S. businesses could lose $6 to $7 billion due to absenteeism due to the Super Bowl. This year, a record 22.6 million workers plan to miss work, up from 16.1 million last year.

Workers have different game plans. About 12.9 million requested the day off, while 3.2 million plan to call in sick, even if they aren’t. Another 3.2 million will “ghost” their jobs, skipping work without notice. Many others will show up late.

Supporters of the bill say a state holiday would boost morale and acknowledge reality. Gore believes Hoosiers deserve “breathing room” and a break.

The bill has been sent to the Committee on Government and Regulatory Reform but hasn’t been scheduled for a hearing. If passed, although unlikely, Indiana would be the first state to officially recognize Super Bowl Monday as a holiday.

Meanwhile, Super Bowl LIX is making history. President Donald Trump plans to attend the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans. He will be the first sitting U.S. president to do so.

Security at the game will be tight, and he will be joined by House Speaker Mike Johnson and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Trump is also expected to appear on Fox News for a pregame interview with Bret Baier.
