WASHINGTON — Just a few months ago, American support for Ukraine seemed clear in its ongoing war against Russia. But, conversation seems to have shifted.

President Trump is now arguing that Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is a “dictator” who had been “playing Biden ‘like a fiddle,'” and is speaking with Russian leadership about how to end the war.

In a post to social media, Trump called Zelenskyy a “comedian.” He noted that the war against Russia “couldn’t be won,” and is being heavily funded by U.S. dollars that continue to go “missing.”

The changing perspective on Ukraine is largely based on economic factors, with Trump claiming that the U.S. has spent “200 billion dollars more than Europe.” He has also expressed an interest in the variety of rare minerals that can be found in the eastern European nation.

And, Hoosier Congresswoman Victoria Spartz – who was born in Ukraine – is in agreement with many of Trump’s points.

She Tweeted Wednesday that Zelenskyy and former President Biden “did fail the American people and the Ukrainian people.” She also wrote that Trump “is not wrong” to call Zelenskyy a “dictator.”

That being said, Zelenskyy is pushing back against this narrative.

In videos posted to Twitter, the Ukrainian leader explained that the U.S. provided about “$67 billion in military aid and $31 billion in budget support.”

He also said his army has few defense missiles left, and he offered to take U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg “to the front.”

Former Vice President and Indiana Governor Mike Pence posted, “Russia launched an unprovoked and brutal invasion claiming hundreds of thousands of lives. The Road to Peace must be built on the Truth.”
