The new Hulu drama Good American Family, set to premiere on March 19, has reignited public interest in the controversial and perplexing story of Natalia Grace.

This docuseries-inspired show, starring Ellen Pompeo, Mark Duplass, and Imogen Faith Reid, is billed as “inspired by many perspectives, threats, interpretations, and accusations,” and explores the complex dynamics surrounding an adopted child with dwarfism who may not be the young girl her adoptive parents thought they had taken in. The show echoes the real-life mystery that was central to The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, which captivated audiences when it aired.

The plot of Good American Family revolves around a couple who adopt a child named Natalia Grace, who has a form of dwarfism. As time goes on, the mother, played by Ellen Pompeo, grows suspicious that Natalia might actually be an adult posing as a child. This scenario will sound familiar to those who watched The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, a docuseries exploring the bizarre and contentious story of the Barnetts, an American couple who adopted Natalia from Ukraine in 2010. They later claimed that Natalia was not a child, but an adult pretending to be one. This sparked significant controversy, especially after the Barnetts moved her out of their home, changed her legal age, and accused her of dangerous behavior.

The Curious Case: Fact vs. Fiction

Natalia Grace, born in Ukraine, suffers from a rare form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, which affects bone growth and often results in a shorter stature. When the Barnetts, who had three biological sons, adopted Natalia, they initially believed she was 6 years old. However, over time, they became convinced that she was much older, eventually claiming she was an adult woman. The Barnetts alleged that she had dangerous tendencies, including attempts to poison them, which led to their decision to reassign her legal age from 8 to 22 in 2012.

These dramatic allegations led to multiple sequels, including The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks and The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: The Final Chapter. The story gained so much attention that it prompted widespread debate on the boundaries between medical conditions, legal status, and age perception.

Natalia Grace’s Side of the Story

In 2016, Natalia was taken in by Antwon and Cynthia Mans, who had befriended her. They eventually petitioned to be her legal guardians. Natalia has consistently denied the accusations made by the Barnetts, asserting that she was a child when she was adopted and that the accusations against her were false. During the filming of The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks, Natalia confronted Michael Barnett, asking why they had adopted her in the first place. The Barnetts’ response that “many of these questions there’s not going to be a single answer to” only deepened the mystery.

Despite initial hopes for a fairytale ending, Natalia’s relationship with the Mans became strained. In The Final Chapter, Antwon Mans revealed that Natalia had begun “acting out” and clashing with them over various issues, including her long-distance relationship with a man in the UK. The drama culminates in Natalia “escaping” to live with Nicole and Vince DePaul, a couple who had attempted to adopt her years prior.

Where Is Natalia Grace Now?

Today, Natalia Grace continues to lead an independent life. In January 2025, she shared with People magazine that she’s preparing to live on her own, learning to drive and working toward earning her GED. She reflected on her tumultuous past, saying, “It’s been a big learning curve for me. For the most part, I’ve made peace. It is definitely a blessing to be alive today. There’s nothing I can do to change the past.”

Despite the chaotic and tragic story surrounding her adoption, Natalia seems determined to move forward, marking a new chapter in her life.
