WASHINGTON—President Trump announced a pause on tariffs for Mexican goods under the USMCA trade agreement until April 2, following a conversation with Mexico’s president.

Trump accused Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau of using the trade war for political gain and blamed former President Biden for the record-high U.S. trade deficit in January.

Commerce Secretary Lutnick suggested that Canadian and Mexican goods compliant with USMCA may be exempt from tariffs for a month, pending progress on fentanyl control.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau affirmed that Canada will not lift retaliatory tariffs until the U.S. removes its duties, emphasizing that the countries are in a trade war. The stock market experienced volatility amid uncertainty over tariffs, with some Chinese suppliers facing pressure to reduce prices due to Trump’s tariffs.
