Speed Limits Could Be Reduced on Seven Indianapolis Roads and Subdivisions

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis City-County Council will consider lowering the speed limits on stretches of seven roads or subdivisions across the city.
The seven proposals come from five councilors. The proposed changes would affect areas from the southeast corner to the north end of the city.
They are:
- Madison Ave. from Pleasant Run Parkway N Drive to I-70 (35 mph)
- 10th Street from Rural to Arsenal Avenue (25 mph)
- Rural Street from 13th Street to North Street (25 mph)
- Badewoods subdivision (20 mph)
- Nora Woods and Manderley subdivisions (25 mph)
- Sunset Heights subdivision (25 mph)
- South Meridian Street from Iowa Street to McCarty Street (25 mph)
“On the northside of Indianapolis, speeding and reckless driving is something I am constantly receiving emails about,” said Councilor Brienne Delaney, who supports lowering the speed limit to 25 miles per hour in the Sunset Heights subdivision.
Councilors Kristin Jones, Jesse Brown, Michael-Paul Hart, and Dan Boots submitted the other proposals.
Delaney knows there could be pushback.
“The speed limit right now is 30, and we are trying to lower it to 25, and you need to follow the law,” Delaney said. “I’ve been working with IMPD as well, trying to get enforcement in certain areas. Where we have seen increased speeding or running stop signs.”
Delaney said infrastructure changes can also help, but that it is a long process.
“Speed bumps. That is something that does slow drivers down,” Delaney said. “But speed bumps are something that the neighbors have to work together to create a petition. There is quite a lengthy administrative process to get those put in.
Delaney wants to make it safer for everyone to use the roads, especially in areas with no sidewalks.
“They feel they need the cars to slow down so they can walk along the perimeters of the roads safely with children, with elderly folks, and that’s the goal to feel safe in their own neighborhoods,” Delaney said.
The proposals have been referred to the Public Works Committee, which is scheduled to meet next Thursday, although the agenda has not yet been made public.
