LAWRENCE, Ind.–A deputy sheriff with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was terminated after being arrested for OWI by the Lawrence Police Department.

The incident occurred in a neighborhood near East 56th Street and Sunnyside Road, where the deputy’s wrecked vehicle was reported on Saturday.

The deputy, David Hodges, was booked at the Marion County Jail on preliminary charges of OWI with endangerment and reckless driving causing property damage.

Court documents say Hodges was in a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche, which had gone off the road and damaged the northwest corner of a home and some nearby landscaping. Police say Hodges told them his girlfriend was in the passenger seat and he threw the Avalanche into reverse because his girlfriend she forgot her purse. They believe he eventually lost control and rolled the Avalanche into the house.

A witness said Hodges was reversing at “extremely high speed” before he lost control and rolled the Avalanche. The owner of the home that Hodges crashed into was not home at the time, but two children were there.

Hodges’ girlfriend was released from the scene after going through a medical examination.

Police say they administered a field sobriety test on Hodges and his blood alcohol content registered at .122. The legal limit is .08.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said Hodges was terminated on Saturday.

He has an initial hearing scheduled for April 7 on a misdemeanor charge of Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person.
