LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sovereignty pulled ahead of favorite Journalism in the final moments to win the 151st Kentucky Derby on a rain-soaked track Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Journalism led the betting throughout the week, with Sandman dubbed “America’s Pick” and Luxor Cafe of Japan among the top contenders.

The $5 million purse matched last year’s total. Sovereignty earned $3.1 million for the win; Journalism claimed $1 million for second.

Wet conditions challenged the field, with 13 horses — including Journalism — lacking experience on a sloppy track. Coal Battle had been 2-for-2 in the mud, while Luxor Cafe entered 3-for-4.
