Three Indiana towns made it to the top 10 in USA TODAY 10Best’s list of the best small towns in the Midwest for 2025. Each town has fewer than 25,000 people and offers a unique charm, rich history, and friendly community.

No. 4 – Vevay, Indiana
Vevay sits along the Ohio River and has deep Swiss roots. It was founded by Swiss immigrants in 1802 and became known for wine making. The town still celebrates that history each year with the Swiss Wine Festival. You can also explore historic buildings like the Benjamin Schenck Mansion, built in 1874. Vevay is located in Jefferson Township and the county seat of Switzerland County, along the Ohio River. The population was 1,741 at the 2020 census.

No. 2 – La Porte, Indiana
La Porte is near the top of the list. The town has three lakes, where you can go boating, swimming, and kayaking. Downtown La Porte is full of history and hosts events like the Sunflower Fair and a popular farmers market. It’s also close to Indiana Dunes National Park, making it perfect for nature lovers. La Porte is a city in LaPorte County of which it is the county seat. Its population was estimated to be 21,341 in 2022.

No. 1 – Madison, Indiana
Madison earned the top spot for towns in the Midwest. It played a key role in the Underground Railroad during the 1800s. Today, you can enjoy views of the Ohio River, hike in Clifty Falls State Park, and explore the historic downtown. Madison boasts river tours, waterfalls, and rich history. Madison is a city in and the county seat of Jefferson County along the Ohio River. As of the 2010 United States Census its population was 11,967. Madison is the largest city along the Ohio River between Louisville and Cincinnati.
