IMS President Talks Grand Prix, 500 Qualifying, and More

SPEEDWAY, Ind.–Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles is expecting a big crowd for this weekend’s Sonsio Grand Prix.
“The good news about the Grand Prix is that it doesn’t really matter with the weather because the cars would run on the road course in the rain, but I think we’ll see maybe the largest crowd we’ve ever had for that race,” said Boles in a Thursday morning interview with 93 WIBC’s Tony Katz.
Boles said they’ve done some work on different parts of the track like the concession stands and followed up on routine maintenance tasks that needed to be finished.
“One of the biggest challenges that we have is when people go to the concession stands, we want to get them quickly back to their seats. We’ve improved some of our busiest concession stands to prevent people from standing in line as long as they do,” said Boles.
Boles has hope that they can sell out their grandstand tickets for the upcoming Indy 500, which hasn’t been done since 2016.
In terms of the drivers qualifying for the race, Boles believes there will be 34 drivers.
“A week from this Sunday is the day that we will determine the starting field. As far as I’m concerned, I want the bump to stay and it’s the fastest 33,” said Boles.
He says the competitiveness among drivers fighting for that last spot is part of the drama and intrigue of the Month of May and the Indy 500.
