CARMEL, Ind.–The Volunteers of America Ohio and Indiana held their Power of Hope event Thursday morning at the Ritz Charles in Carmel.

The Volunteers of America Ohio and Indiana calls themselves more than a nonprofit. They say they provide housing and assistance to veterans, mothers struggling with addiction, individuals returning from prison, and families in need.

This event featured breakfast and remarks from President and CEO of Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana John R. von Arx III.

“We have been around since 1896 and we’re very proud to work with those in need,” said von Arx III.

One of the people who attended the event was a woman named Annie who said the VOA changed her life.

“I went there when I was one month into recovery. Now, I’m 18 months clean because of the VOA. They supported both my child and me the full way through,” said Annie.

Greg is a U.S. Army veteran. He spoke at the banquet as well. When he was struggling, he said the VOA was the best possible place for him to turn.

“You’ll find someone to help you. Go find the VOA or someone to help you if you’re struggling. It’s a nowhere road if you don’t and it will take your life away from you,” said Greg.

Organizers of the Power of Hope event say its purpose was to stand shoulder to shoulder with Hoosiers and tell them they are not alone.
