Are New Toll Roads Coming To Indiana? We don’t want to be like a New Jersey and have to pay a toll just to get to work.

Tony Katz:

So, we’re going to add tolls in Indiana. Is this the plan? You’ve got House Bill 1461. Which actually it removes impediments, I believe removing restrictions for the Indiana Department of Transportation to where certain tolls can be put. We’re going to tax. We’re going to put a toll tax. See what I did there? Oops. Too soon. On 70 and on 74, right? This is this is the plan we’re going to, we’re going to tax these roads or toll these. See, I did it again. I did it again, Jeepers. Gosh, I would say it’s Freudian, but no. Uh, and, and, and the plan is, well, we’ve got so many people traveling these as, as we’re the Crossroads of America that the only way to keep these roads up and running is to put these tolls on. You guys know I was born in Brooklyn, right? And you know I grew up in New Jersey. I grew up paying tolls to do everything… Growing up in Middletown, NJ, I paid a toll every X number of miles, New Jersey Turnpike heading into Manhattan paid toll all the time. Never mind what you paid at the Holland Tunnel, which the Holland Tunnel you paid to get into New York. But not going out. You had to pay to leave New Jersey. That’s the way it works. Tolls are not good. Tolls are an incredible cost. To the people who live there. That’s what they are. So, there’s gonna be a conversation about tolls. We’re going to lower the gas tax now, aren’t we? We’re gonna lower the abusive, onerous gas tax, which was going to fix the roads? That’s the plan, right? Because if that’s not the plan, and now with an increase in taxes on specific businesses, which this General Assembly has done, we’re going to talk tolls? How is this not a supermajority Democratic Party, super majority Democratic state? How is it not if this is the argument? No lowering of the gas tax if we’re going to toll these roads? And Lord only knows what else might get done. At what moment does somebody say, yeah, this is maybe a bad idea, Hey, maybe there’s another way. Hey, maybe we have to do more with less. Hey, maybe. Because all I’ve seen from these few months of the Braun administration, and this Republican Party is well… sucks to be you, Hoosiers. And it has not been enjoyable. I just don’t know if people are really ready to make changes at a ballot box. Who they run for office and who they eventually vote for. If Democrats were smart, they’d be like this is their moment. They would be working to make this their moment. But no, they’re going to screw it up.
